Young Women Activity

One Sunday when none of the Young Women Leaders showed up, I stepped in to teach the class.  I had nothing prepared, but I would talk about and encourage them about working on their Personal Progress goals.  I suggested that one of the things they could do was learn a cooking skill and I would be glad to help them do that.  I suggested that with Valentine's Day coming up, maybe they would like to make Valentine cookies at our flat.  They were excited for that activity!  It was agreed that they would meet at the church at 10:00, then Elder Baxter would be there tho bus them to our flat.  True to African time, they were mostly there by 11:00

I had already made a batch of dough and put in the fridge to firm up a bit and then we made a batch so they could see how it was done and they each took turns to help to make it themselves.

I had enough aprons to share for the girls who hadn't brought one.  From left to right are Ngema,
Bridgette, Phela, Senethemba, and Sara.

We got the frosting made so it would be ready to start frosting when the cookies had cooled.

Ngama's little sister came along for the baking lesson even though she isn't in Young Women's yet.
She probably did more than many of the older girls, and had a blast doing it!

After the dough was made I demonstrated how to roll and cut the dough,
and put the cookies on the pan.

The girls had fun rolling out cookies!

Check out the fancy hair styles!
It takes several hours to have all those braids done.

Nolwazi is the one up front.  She came late because her Mom wouldn't let her come
until her chores were done.  Then she had a 50 minute bus ride to get here

The girls wanted to get creative and asked me if I had any jam that they could put in the center.
The cookies looked fancy, but because they had rolled them so thick, they were a little dry.

The enjoyed the frosting and decorating as well!

They definitely had lots of cookies to take home!

They took a break and snacked on veggies, dip, and chips
before putting their cookies on plates to take home.
They all agreed it was a successful day and promised to write it down in their
Personal Progress journals as another goal completed!
